The church is born: a verse-by-verse journey through the book of acts
"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8
The Spirit came. The Gospel spread. The Church was born.
There is something powerful about opening your Bible and slowing down long enough to really see what is happening in the text.
That is exactly what we are doing with our newest Rooted video series, The Church Is Born: A Verse-by-Verse Journey Through the Book of Acts.
And we would love for you to join us.
What Happened Next?
The Gospel of Luke tells us about the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Then Acts picks up the story.
Jesus is risen. He spends time with His disciples, teaching them and preparing them for what is coming. Before He ascends to heaven, He gives them a mission:
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”Acts 1:8
That one verse gives us a roadmap for much of the Book of Acts.
Jerusalem.Judea.Samaria.The ends of the earth.
Throughout Acts, we watch that mission unfold.
The Holy Spirit comes. Peter preaches. Thousands believe. The Church grows. Persecution begins. The Gospel crosses boundaries. Saul encounters Jesus and becomes Paul. Missionaries are sent. Churches are planted. Prison doors open. There are miracles, disagreements, riots, trials, shipwrecks—and through all of it, the Gospel keeps moving.
Acts reminds us that the story of the early Church wasn't built around perfect people who had everything figured out.
God used ordinary people who were willing to trust Him, obey Him, and boldly tell others about Jesus.
Why We're Studying Acts Verse-by-Verse
At Rooted, we don't want to simply pull a verse out of Scripture and build an idea around it.
We want to teach the text—not use the text to teach our idea.
That's why we're slowing down and walking through Acts verse by verse.
Holly, Hannah, Emily, and Randa will take turns teaching as we move through all 28 chapters.
Along the way, we'll look at:
Historical and cultural context
People and places
Important words and themes
Old and New Testament connections
The work of the Holy Spirit
The growth of the early Church
The spread of the Gospel
Truths we can apply to our lives today
We want you to understand not only what happened, but also how each passage fits into the bigger story of Scripture.
You Don't Have to Be a Bible Scholar
Maybe you've never studied an entire book of the Bible before.
Maybe you've read Acts but moved through it quickly.
Maybe you have questions about the Holy Spirit, Pentecost, the early Church, Paul, or some of the more difficult passages.
Or maybe you're simply hungry to understand God's Word more deeply.
You are welcome here.
You don't need a theology degree.
You don't need the perfect Bible.
You don't need fancy study tools.
You don't have to know all the answers.
Bring your Bible. Bring a journal if you want one. Bring your questions.
Then open the Word with us.
More Than Learning About the Early Church
Our goal isn't simply to finish 28 chapters and say, “Now I know more about Acts.”
We want God's Word to take root.
As we study, we'll continually ask:
What does the passage actually say? What did it mean in its original context? What does it teach us about God?How does it connect to the rest of Scripture? And how should knowing this change the way we live?
Because Bible study shouldn't stop with information.
God's Word should produce transformation.
